Statement
Mhairi McPhail (she/her) is a Scottish Visual Artist based in Edinburgh. She graduated with a First-Class Honours in Painting from Edinburgh College of Art in 2021. Mhairi is now has a shared space at Abbeymount Studios, where she continues to develop her professional practice.
Using methods of drawing, painting, printmaking and installation, the domestic interior is the crux of Mhairi's work. Seemingly nostalgic and pleasing images of domestic patterns, children's toys and cartoon animals entrap the viewer. The familiar and ornamental images are subverted alongside images of armoury and weapons to create an innocuous tension. Lured by the construction of fantasy spaces, the artist hopes to reclaim a sense of protection and strength.
